"Children need most of the same things adults need-- consideration, respect for their work, the knowledge that what they do is taken seriously" - Carline Pratt, I Learn From Children
Level 1: Creating Caring Community
In order to achieve a productive classroom that embodies Progressive and Reconstructive ideals students must feel safe and support by myself and they fellow classmates. A caring classroom community will be created by students understanding each other, feeling respected by their teacher, and consistent expectations. |
Level 2: Recovery with Accountability
Each student in my classroom is only a few years from being what society views as "adult" members of our society. I believe students should be treated as adult within my classroom. Mutual respect and understand will guide classroom procedures. By treating students as individual it will foster a feeling of student and encourage active participation in their learning. |
Level 3: Life Skills- Long Term Support
A student's time in secondary school is a time for them to create tools for life long success. The progressive theory focuses on the student as a whole and support is a necessary part of this. Students will learn through emotional literacy, consequence understanding, and self discipline what is necessary to be a responsible individual. |
Level 4: Somewhere Else to Plan
All students are individuals and some students may need the ability to alter their learning space. I do not see an alternative place to learn as a punishment. However, I understand sometime it may serve that function. Not all students can or will respond to such freedom in the classroom. For these students steps will be taken to provide the best place for them to achieve active learning. |
Level 5: Wraparound Support
I believe in student learn reaching outside the classroom for tools, information, and experiences I want them to be self sufficient and self motivated. However, some student will need a more comprehensive support system. For these students I , as an educator, will extend outside the classroom in order to achieve student success. This will mean utilizing further agreements between student and teacher, reaching out to parents, and creating meaningful and supportive pairing within the classroom. |
